Prior to purchasing LabStats we never really had a way of collecting statistics, but the addition of LabStats has changed the way we do things. Our labs are funded departmentally, so being able to show where specific applications were needed in specific labs (and where they weren’t) was important to everyone.
“Application tracking showed us where money would be well spent, and where it would be wasted.”
When it came to budgeting and software decisions, application tracking was a big help. It’s generally accepted that everyone needs Microsoft Office; we were more interested in seeing the use of our pricier applications, such as the Adobe Creative Suite and SPSS. These were considered optional applications, and we found ourselves asking how many licenses we really needed. We have 1,400 computers in over 100 labs. How widely deployed did these applications need to be? Application tracking showed us where money would be well spent, and where it would be wasted.
LabStats has helped our students too. With Maps we’ve been able to showcase four labs online for their convenience. LabStats has helped us run our labs more smoothly, please our students, and make budgeting decisions with each lab in mind.
