What Software Does LabStats Track Out of the Box?

LabStats tracks more software out of the box than leading competitors.

LabStats has saved large universities hundreds of hours of staff time with our extensive library of applications that are tracked by default.

For busy IT managers, all you need to do is install the client and let it run. Through working with thousands of universities around the world, we’ve dialed into about 80% of the software applications that most schools have in common, and we track them by default. This also covers version changes for the most common applications.

Whatever you decide to monitor during initial set up, you can edit the list of applications at any time. We recommend erring on the side of tracking “too many” applications initially, and then tapering down the amount of apps you’re tracking over time to best fit your needs.

LabStats Software Inventory

The Software Inventory is the process that the LabStats client uses to identify what software is installed on a station. While we do have a catalogue of commonly utilized apps, Software Inventory will detect many more that are not part of the catalogue and add them to the LabStats Portal to be tracked. This makes it very easy for customers to find and track a particular program without having to set up and define things like tracking patterns on their own.

The Software Inventory will run every 24 hours, as long as the station is powered on and checked-in to LabStats during that time. It will check in the following locations for installed software:

  • Public Start Menu
  • Public Desktop
  • Public AppData

How to Check Software Inventory

If an application isn’t in the standard Application Manager list because it isn’t part of our pre-populated catalog, it is nearly always picked up by the Software Inventory process. To run Software Inventory, navigate to the Applications Manager. Click on the Show Software Inventory button.

Adding applications to track is quick and easy.

Unlike other monitoring programs, you don’t need to take the time to go down to the executables to mark and group each additional application you’d like to monitor.

If an application has not been picked up by the Software Inventory, you may need to add it manually. To do this, simply navigate to Applications Manager, then click Define Desktop App or Define a Web App.
