LabStats can help you identify where you have underutilized space on campus that you can repurpose for other uses that are in higher demand.

LabStats is like a sanity check for university IT leaders.

Have you experienced the following scenario? You know you have empty labs on campus. You can see it when you walk by. But how consistently are they empty? How many computers can you safely remove? Space on university campuses is tighter than ever, and every department is competing for more room.

LabStats can help you identify where you have underutilized space on campus that you can repurpose for other uses that are in higher demand.

Finding Underutilized Space Starts with Computer Usage Data

LabStats’ reports show how often computers are used. This data can help you understand what areas on campus students actually use, but more importantly, what areas are equipped with expensive machines that students don’t use.

To find underutilized computers, follow these tutorials:

Cluster Computers Where Students Already Go

Where do you find the most student activity on campus? Is it the Library, Student Court, or Cafeteria?

If students are in a hurry to print a paper or quickly finish up an assignment, they will likely use computers close by, even if there’s a line or if the computers are lower-specs.

Consider clustering computers in the common areas to maximize usage in the areas where students already frequent.

Direct Students to Specific Computer Labs

Encourage students to use underutilized space on campus by highlighting available computers in those areas. You can publish live computer availability with LabMaps. LabMaps are dynamic maps that you can customize to show the location and live availability of computers in your labs.

You make changes to your LabMaps any time you move a computer or change a computer lab schedule, and then publish it on kiosks around campus or your school’s website. LabMaps can help direct students to the least used areas of campus to maximize space management.
